Using tileable web patterns in After Effects

http://vimeo.com/29549775

Have you ever considered using web backgrounds in After Effects?

There are a ton of sites out there offering free tileable patterns meant for use on the internets. Many of the collections look amazing. And many of them are large enough to use in HD video projects.

And while background tiles are automatically repeated for you in your site, we have good ‘ol CC RepeTile to do the same thing in After Effects. You can use this effect with these free assets to extend and repeat your tile as big as you like. Texture text, create environments and backgrounds for a unique look in your AE projects.

Thing is… become a collector and snatch up the free files while you still can. The above video example was made using excellent patterns from a site called PatternWall.com.  I liked them so much I grabbed and saved as much as I could but I eventually had to call it a day. I always thought I could go back to get more. When I tried I found the site has gone. Maybe their just late with one payment, or maybe they’re never coming back. My point is if you find something good, save it right away. Even if you don’t have an immediate use for it right now, you could start a library and get it when you need it.

PatternWall.com may be away right now you can start your tileable pattern collection at WebTreats.

New Cinema 4D title at Lynda.com

A few days ago a new Cinema 4D training title appeared on Lynda.com. Cinema 4D: Designing a Promo by Rob Garrott from the Bending Pixels website. This title goes through the creation of a promo for a fictional shark series. It covers how to use C4D, After Effects and Illustrator to make an awesome underwater promo complete with 3D sharks which he shows you how to make from scratch. It also covers everything from the creative brief, making animatics and all that agency stuff you may not be privy to if you’re just starting out. Free samples can be seen at Lynda.com. Or you can get a quick peek at the result right here:

How to use Sure Target 2

Sure Target 2Andrew Kramer did us a great service by giving away his Sure Target 2 plugin for free. Unfortunately there are no written instructions or manual. Yes, there’s an excellent video tutorial but if you need to quickly look up a Sure Target 2 feature you’ll need to scrub through the tutorial to find it. I took some notes from the tutorial and I thought it might be helpful if I shared them with you. Keep in mind I wrote them for my own use so it may not be a pretty read but I’m sure you’ll find what you’re looking for.

Optical FlaresAndrew Kramer announced today on the Video Copilot site that the much anticipated alternative to Knoll Light Factory, Optical Flares, will be released on January 25. Knoll 3D Flare

Aharon Rabinowitz updated the Red Giant Red Room Blog with news of something called Knoll 3D Flare, an upcoming add-on to the Knoll Light Factory Pro plugin. He mentions a lot of really nice enhancements, some of which you wonder why they weren’t added sooner.  You’d probably be correct to guess the reason for sudden action is fear of Andrew Kramer‘s upcoming Optical Flare plugin.
